Herodes Atticus

Herodes Atticus, a great orator and writer of the greek ancient times, was born in Marathon and lived between 101 – 177 AD.

He was a part of the Second Sophistic , a trend of thought of the second century AD that rejuvenated the way rhetorics was undertaken.

Herodes was a member of a prosperous athenian family, and he was living upscale under the Roman Empire, receiving roman citizenship, and also becoming friends with roman emperor Hadrian, which named him a consul of the free roman cities in Asia. He was also an Archon of Athens, around 140, and become the teacher of the future to be, roman emperor, Marcus Aurelius.

Herodes Atticus was a great benefactor, he used to adorn a lot of greek monuments, of which we have today, the Odeon of Heordes AtticusĀ , for example.
